UL 1561:2023 Dry-Type General Purpose and Power Transformers

UL 1561:2023 sets safety specifications for dry-type general purpose and power transformers. Its Clause 23 temperature test follows ANSI/IEEE C57.12.91. K-factor rated transformers must be subjected to matching non-sinusoidal harmonic loads, with permitted test methods including loading-back and resistance methods. Harmonic eddy-current losses need correction calculation, while all component temperatures must stay within limits without fire hazards or material damage.

The standard includes enclosure environmental tests for different type classifications. Type 2 enclosures complete a 30-minute drip test using a dedicated drip pan to check against water ingress on live components. Type 3R and 3RX enclosures require an icing test combining low temperature and angled cold water spray to form specified ice thickness. The assembly is then stabilized under freezing conditions; the enclosure must remain undamaged after ice thaws. These test procedures cannot be replaced by standard IEC IP testing equipment.
