To verify whether the metal parts on the product will corrode when exposed to the atmosphere or other environments, the product can be placed in the working environment for a long enough time, such as a life cycle of the product. However, this is time-consuming and labor intensive, and it is rarely used in practice. And the salt spray test is a method of artificially simulating salt spray environmental conditions to accelerate the corrosion resistance evaluation. Usually, the test only takes a few days or even a few hours, greatly improve the efficiency of the experiment.
Related standards such as IEC60068-2-11 (GB/T2423.17), ASTM-B117, GJB150 have clear and specific regulations on salt spray test conditions, such as temperature, humidity, sodium chloride solution concentration and PH value. The salt spray test is generally divided into four types: neutral salt spray test (NNS test), acetic acid salt spray test (ASS test), copper salt accelerated acetic acid salt spray test (CASS test) and alternating salt spray test. Usually we use the neutral salt spray test, which is the earliest and most widely used test method for accelerated corrosion. It use 5% sodium chloride salt aqueous solution, the pH value of the solution is adjusted in the neutral range (6-7) as the spray solution. The test temperature is 35℃, and the sedimentation rate of the salt spray is required to be between 1-2ml/2000px2.h. The salt spray corrosion resistance of the tested sample is reflected by observing the change of the tested sample after being placed in the box for a period of time.
The methods for judging the results of the salt spray test include: rating judging method, weighing judging method, corrosive appearance judging method, and corrosion data statistical analysis method.
