The Test Finger of IEC 60238 Figure 16 is a specialized safety tool engineered for testing access to hazardous live parts in wire and cable equipment—such as cable terminations, joint boxes, power cable connectors, and cable distribution panels. Its articulated (1-joint) design mimics the natural movement of a human finger, allowing it to navigate the curved or narrow gaps around cable connections that rigid probes can’t reach. Crafted from conductive stainless steel (for detecting live components) and paired with a heat-resistant insulated handle, it applies a controlled 10N thrust to simulate accidental light contact. Strictly compliant with IEC 60238 (the global standard for insulated wires and cables), it’s critical for manufacturers to prevent electric shock risks and meet global cable equipment safety regulations.
Specifications:
Standards: IEC 60238 Figure 16; IEC61032 Figure 2 (Test probe B)
Probe Material: Conductive stainless steel (resistance ≤ 0.1Ω; corrosion-resistant; 1 articulated joint for flexibility)
Handle Material: Silicone-coated ABS plastic (fully insulated, resistance ≥ 100MΩ; heat-resistant up to 120°C; ergonomic grip for precision)
Joint Characteristics: 1 pivot joint; max bending angle: 90°; maintains structural integrity under 10N thrust; fits cable equipment gaps (≥6mm)
Key Dimensions:
– Knurled Finger Diameter: 12 mm
– Knurled Finger Length: 80 mm
– Baffle Plate Diameter: 50 mm
– Baffle Plate Length: 100 mm
– Baffle thickness: 20 mm
Applied Thrust: 10N ± 0.5N (standard for IEC 60238 testing; simulates light accidental finger contact with cable equipment)
Core Function: Navigates gaps around cable connections via flexible joint; detects accessible hazardous live parts; ensures IEC 60238 compliance
Test Procedures:
1. Inspect the test finger for damage (loose joint, bent tip, cracked insulation) and confirm conductivity with a test tool.
2. Power on the wire/cable equipment under test (EUT, e.g., cable joint box) and set it to normal operating mode.
3. Hold the insulated handle, use the joint to guide the probe into EUT gaps (e.g., cable termination seams, panel slots).
4. Apply a steady 10N thrust to advance the probe—stop when resistance from the EUT’s enclosure or components is felt.
5. Check the connected live-part detection instrument for signals (indicating contact with hazardous parts).
6. Record results: Pass if no contact; Fail if live parts are accessible.
Applications:
1. Testing access to live terminals in power cable joint boxes (per IEC 60238Figure 16) to prevent electric shock.
2. Verifying gap safety around communication cable termination panels for technician protection.
3. Safety checks for cable distribution box seams (per IEC 61032:2017) to block exposure to live wire connections.
4. Quality control for industrial power cable connectors during manufacturing, ensuring IEC 60238 compliance.
5. Post-production testing of residential cable entry panels (e.g., internet/TV cable boxes) to meet global safety standards.
